 In occasione
del week-end del Ringraziamento, il giovane Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell) viene assunto per fare da accompagnatore al
tenente colonnello Frank Slade (Al Pacino), che lo trascina a sorpresa a New York, rivelandosi un uomo dalla
personalità poliedrica: a tratti irascibile e spigoloso, in altri istanti ironico e autoironico, in altri istanti
irresistibile seduttore di donne, per le quali ha una particolare passione.
Il giovane racconta al Colonnello dei
suoi problemi a scuola, ma il colonnello rimane evasivo in fatto di consigli, in quanto ha già scoperto che Charles
non intende svelare il nome dei colpevoli, non cedendo al ricatto del preside.
Terminato il rocambolesco week-end,
l'intera Baird School viene convocata in assemblea da Trask, il Preside, per discutere gli ultimi avvenimenti. A
sorpresa appare il colonnello in difesa di Charlie (in loco parentis), il quale, durante un memorabile intervento,
accusa la Berd School di preparare leader disonesti, se qualcuno ha potuto sperare di corrompere il giovane Charles
assicurandogli un futuro.

 Frank is a
retired Lt Col in the US army. He's blind and impossible to get along with. Charlie is at school and is looking forward
to going to university; to help pay for a trip home for Christmas, he agrees to look after Frank over thanksgiving.
Frank's niece says this will be easy money, but she didn't reckon on Frank spending his thanksgiving in New York.
